Perpetrators of crime should be booked: Sangma

Shillong, November 22 : Meghalaya chief minister, Mukul Sangma on November 22 said the perpetrators of crime should be brought to book in order to deter the wrong doers.
Inaugurating a seminar on “Eliminating Rising Tide of Crime Women and Children in the North East: Police Pro-Activism and Legal Remedies” organized by the Rotary Club of Shillong in collaboration with National Commission for Women, New Delhi. Sangma said there were a number of instances in which victims and wrong doers tried to prevail on the law enforcing agency not to register cases.  Sangma also expressed concern and surprise over the rising crime against women and children in the tribal matrilineal society like Meghalaya.
He said there were also instances in which the victims themselves would prefer for compromise before the case was registered and this created problem for the law enforcing agency who wanted to aggressively pursue the matter. “Even if cases were registered, how many of them are effectively tackled by the administration of justice?” Sangma asked, adding that even the well educated women are not fully aware of the various laws for the protection of the laws. He said the people should be made aware of the various laws which protect the women and children and all the registered cases should be aggressively pursued so that they come to a logical conclusion.
