Kohima, September 15 (MExN): A two-day specialised training for Mathematics and Science teachers under the Learning Enhancement Programme (LEP) for PM SHRI Schools in Nagaland got underway at SIEMAT-SCERT, Kohima, on September 15, with a focus on addressing subject-specific learning gaps and improving students’ performance.
According to a DIPR report, the training being organised by the Department of School Education, Nagaland, and attended by 48 government teachers from 21 PM SHRI Schools across the State.
Addressing the teachers, Joint Mission Director, Samagra Nagaland, Dr Kevizakie Rio stressed the need for greater commitment in teaching Mathematics and Science.
He stated that Nagaland had recorded poor performance in the two subjects in the National Achievement Survey and attributed this, among other factors, to students perceiving the subjects as difficult, resulting in a “fear psychosis” and reluctance to engage with them.
Rio expressed hope that the specialised training would provide a productive and interactive platform for teachers and contribute to improved learning outcomes as the LEP is implemented across PM SHRI Schools in the State.
He said the training would identify Class IX and X Mathematics and Science teachers to address subject-specific learning gaps, with students to be identified through academic assessments and Board Examination performance.
The training focuses on identifying foundational and conceptual learning gaps; strengthening core concepts in Mathematics and Science; developing subject-specific remedial and learning-enhancement strategies; and promoting learner-centred and activity-based teaching approaches.
It also covers the development and effective use of supplementary learning resources, along with strategies to improve students’ problem-solving, analytical and application-based skills, particularly in preparation for the Class X Board Examination.
Co-Founder and Principal Scientist of ThinkTac, Dr Prochete Mallik, who spoke on the training overview, highlighted the use of hands-on activities in science education.
He said ThinkTac works with schools and teachers in the Northeast and North Bengal, using practical activities to enhance students’ learning and develop their ability to make and understand things.
Mallik said the two-day training would cover 24 science topics and 10 Mathematics topics, combining hands-on activities, formal sessions and teacher presentations.
Dr Bijano Murry, Joint Mission Director, Samagra Shiksha and State Nodal Officer (SNO), PM SHRI Nagaland, chaired the programme and delivered the introduction and welcome address.
The resource persons included Mallik, Gopinath, Kakoli and Priyanshu from ThinkTac, the State DIPR added.
