Imphal | February 6

Police on Thursday foiled a rally of the striking college teachers by detaining them inside a college campus in Imphal.

The rally was planned to carry out on the streets of Imphal by the teachers of All Manipur College Teachers’ Association (AMCTA) in solidarity to the demand of the striking Federation of Government College Teachers' Association (FEGOCTA) Manipur.

Teachers of government teachers in Manipur under the aegis of FEGOCTA have been on strike since January 28 with adoption of 7th UGC Pay and Regulations 2018 as key demand.

Failure on the part of the government to address their demands, FEGOCTA had commenced its indefinite cease work strike from February 3. However, a good number of police detailed by the authority of the state government have prevented the teachers from carrying out the rally.

Talking to reporters at the venue, AMCTA spokesperson, Dr I Ibotombi Singh accused the state government of sidelining the demand for adoption of 7th UGC Pay and Regulations 2018 which is a long pending demand.

He strongly criticised the present BJP-led coalition government allegedly of not keeping its promises while reminding the election manifesto of the BJP that promised adoption of pay structures recommended by the 7th Pay Commission to the employees of the state government.

He also alleged that the BJP-led government has completed two and a half year of its tenure. However, the promise is yet to be translated into work so far as college teachers are concerned.

Beside the adoption of 7th UGC Pay and Regulations 2018, the college teachers have been pressing the state government to address their 10-point charter of demands. FEGOCTA had already commenced indefinite cease work strike from February 3.
