Probe confirms M'laya illegal toll gates

Shillong, December 5 (NNN): The sub committee on illegal toll collections in National highway 62 of Meghalya's East Garo Hills district stumbled upon the Garo Hills autonomous district council (GHADC) weight bridge charging more than the government rate from the trucks.
The members of the sub committee constituted by the Meghalaya legislative assembly comprising of the leader of the opposition Conrad K Sangma and three other MLAs were carrying an investigation into the illegal collection of tolls in the strategic highway. To their surprise, they found that the government owned institution was one of those involved in such illegal activities.
Disclosing this in Shillong on Monday, leader of the opposition Conrad K Sangma said, “The GHADC weigh bridge collected Rs 1200 from each truck instead of the Rs 50 entry fee and Rs 75 for each tonne of excess load”.
“We have video recordings and collected all the documents to prove our point”, stated Sangma, adding, “There are 10-12 other illegal toll gates that we have come across during our four day long investigation”. Sangma also said that his disclosure today was just a tip of an ice-berg.
