Railways roll out festive special trains to ease holiday rush

Maligaon, February 15 (MExN): Indian Railways will operate 1,500 special trains this year to manage the festive rush, reaffirming its commitment to passenger convenience and smoother travel across major routes.

In line with the initiative, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced four pairs of special trains to accommodate increased passenger demand during the Holi festival. Additional services are expected to be announced in the coming days.

The special trains will operate on the Narangi–Gorakhpur–Narangi, Katihar–Amritsar–Katihar, Dibrugarh–Jhanjharpur–Dibrugarh and Dibrugarh–Kolkata–Dibrugarh routes.

Special Train No. 05633 (Narangi–Gorakhpur) will run every Thursday from February 19 to March 26, 2026, departing Narangi at 13:20 hrs and reaching Gorakhpur at 13:00 hrs the following day. In the return direction, Special Train No. 05634 (Gorakhpur–Narangi) will run every Friday from February 20 to March 27, 2026, departing at 16:55 hrs and arriving at Narangi at 21:40 hrs the next day. Both trains will operate six trips each.

Special Train No. 05736 (Katihar–Amritsar) will run every Wednesday from February 18 to March 25, 2026, departing Katihar at 21:00 hrs and reaching Amritsar at 09:45 hrs on Friday. The return service, Special Train No. 05735 (Amritsar–Katihar), will run every Friday from February 20 to March 27, 2026, departing at 13:25 hrs and arriving at Katihar at 23:45 hrs the next day. Both services will complete six trips each.

Special Train No. 05974 (Dibrugarh–Jhanjharpur) will operate every Tuesday from February 17 to March 31, 2026, departing Dibrugarh at 05:20 hrs and reaching Jhanjharpur at 11:30 hrs the following day. The return service, Special Train No. 05973 (Jhanjharpur–Dibrugarh), will run every Wednesday from February 18 to April 1, 2026, departing at 13:00 hrs and arriving at Dibrugarh at 20:20 hrs the next day. Both trains will run seven trips each.

Special Train No. 05932 (Dibrugarh–Kolkata) will run every Saturday from February 21 to March 7, 2026, departing Dibrugarh at 17:00 hrs and reaching Kolkata at 00:30 hrs on Monday. The return service, Special Train No. 05931 (Kolkata–Dibrugarh), will run every Monday from February 23 to March 9, 2026, departing at 02:30 hrs and arriving at Dibrugarh at 06:30 hrs the next day. Both trains will operate three trips each.

The special services aim to ease congestion on regular trains and ensure safe, convenient and timely travel for passengers celebrating the festival of colours with their families.
