Dimapur, May 19 (MExN): Enhanced rainfall activity is expected to continue over the weekend in the North-East, including Nagaland, according to an update by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati on May 19.
As per the 5-day forecast of the RMC from May 19-23, the most heavy rainfall is expected in Assam and Meghalaya in the next two days upto May 21.
Accordingly, the ‘Orange’ (Be Prepared) alert has been issued for the two states from May 19-21 followed by “Yellow- (Be Updated)” watch on May 22. For Arunachal Pradesh, while there was ‘Orange’ alert for May 19, a ‘Yellow’ alert was issued for the next two days.
In Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, the regional met office forecasted ‘Yellow’ alert on May 19 and 21, but ‘light to moderate rainfall at most places’ on other days.
On May 23, all the NE states were forecasted to experience ‘light to moderate rainfall at most places.’
The RMC attributed current weather condition to the moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal to low-level Southerly/Southwesterly winds during May 19-21.
Meanwhile, during the last 24 hours recorded till 8:30am of May 19, rainfall over 7 centimetre occurred in several locations in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.
The highest was recorded in Shora, Meghalaya with 26 cm of rainfall, followed by Mawsynram (13 cm), Karimganj 11 cm, and 10 cm in Dhubri and Dhekiajuli.
Continued incessant downpour in the North-East in the past few days has resulted in floods and landslides, leading to loss of lives and properties as well as snapping of land and rail links.
