R.C. Chiten Jamir, the man I knew

The old guard of our society is declining in numbers. There are but a handful still alive. Life is a blessing from God and as life begins, life must also end. This inescapable facet of human frailty leads me to pen a few words about late R.C. Chiten Jamir, a man I knew and worked with.
My condolences to the bereaved family of late R.C. Chiten Jamir. I believe that he will always be an aspiration to you and though he is no more, he will continue to guide you and you will remember him for the person he was and the life he lived.
R. C. Chiten Jamir was an educated, well informed and conscientious leader among the Naga politicians. I greatly admired and respected him as a senior colleague when we worked together under the first three Chief Ministers, Mr. P. Shilu Ao, Mr. T. N. Angami and Mr. Hokishe Sema. He strongly advocated the inculcation of our traditional values of honesty and integrity in public life. With this basic foundation, he was of the firm opinion that Naga society could have all round economic development and good governance. His vision was a developed and prosperous Nagaland where every single village and villager is an active participant in the affairs of the state. After he left public office, his numerous writings on lay as well as religious topics reveal that he continued to have this vision.
On the Naga political issue, he believed that the Nagas as a whole must unite and speak with one voice. It was his conviction that speaking in unity and by adoption of peaceful means, the political issue could be resolved. It is our misfortune that we did not have more people like him. I believe that if we had people like him holding the reins of power, the course of Naga history could have been less fraught with dangers and bloodshed and we may even have been differently circumstanced today.
He was an immensely talented and capable person. He could hold his own on any subject. It was these qualities that made him feared and respected by friend and foe alike. Personally, I find it extremely painful that a son of the Nagas with the potential to lead our society to positive progress was sidelined. A man of his ability and talent should not have been shunted out leaving us the poorer for not utilizing his services. His demise is not only a loss to his family but a loss to the Nagas as a whole.
I write this short eulogy about R.C. Chiten Jamir, a person who I considered to be my friend. I would urge all Nagas, young and old to emulate him and to strive to rejuvenate Naga society. Like him, let us bequeath a legacy of hope to those who will come after us. As for Late R. C. Chiten Jamir, I believe he has fought the good fight and he returns home after completing his journey on this earth. May the Almighty God grant his soul, eternal rest.
