Record 17 Nagaland players compete in 22nd North East Chess Championship

TRIPURA, DECEMBER 21 (MExN): A record 17 players from Nagaland are competing in the 22nd edition of the North East Fide Rating Chess Championship 2024, which kicked off on December 15 and will run until December 22. Hosted in Udaipur, Tripura, this prestigious event has attracted 288 participants from eight North Eastern states.

According to a press release, the Nagaland Chess Association (NCA) has sent a strong contingent this year, with players vying for top honors in the competition. Senior National Arbiter and Honorary Secretary of the NCA, Vekukho Soho, is officiating as an Arbiter alongside other officials at the Championship.

As of Round 8, Gurung Rahul from Sikkim is leading the tournament with 7.5 points. Players from Nagaland have also shown strong performances, with the following current scores- Kevilekho Zumvu – 6 points, Seyiekhrietuo Mere – 6 points, Melesai Dawhuo – 5.5 points, Salhuto Nyekha – 5.5 points, Mengise Haikam – 5.5 points, Bovito Yeptho – 5 points, Kehung Haikam – 5 points, Vesho Doulo – 4 points, Akangzang Haikam – 4 points, Jitihto Nyekha – 3 points, Icicang Haikam – 4 points, S Litingse Sangtam – 4 points, Thopimi Assumi – 4 points, Irangtui – 3 points, Iloto Seb – 3 points, Marwapang – 3 points.

The championship, held annually, features players from eight North Eastern states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. Each state is allowed to send an unlimited number of players, provided they are officially recommended by their respective State Chess Associations.

The total prize pool for the event is Rs 5 lakh, with the first-place winner receiving Rs 1 lakh. Other prizes range from Rs 75,000 to Rs 25,000, with a total of 110 prizes across various categories.
