ULFA insurgents exchange fire with police
Dibrugarh, November 27 (Agencies): ULFA insurgents exchanged fired with police in an encounter in the dense jungles of Dibrugarh district in upper Assam Saturday night and fled away leaving behind arms and ammunition, a senior district police official said on Sunday. Based on intelligence input that the four extremists were hiding in the forests between Madhupur and Medela, the police surrounded the area and the ultras came face-to-face with the security men as they were attempting to escape in two motor-bikes, district superintendent of police Arabinda Kalita said. The ultras opened fire and four of their bullets hit the vehicle of the police but none was injured, Kalita said. The police also retaliated but the undergrounds fled away towards the interior of the forests under the cover of darkness, he said. During search operations, the two motor-bikes, a 15-kg IED, an AK-81 series assault rifle with 30 rounds of live cartridge and a mobile handset were recovered belong to the extremists were recovered, the SP said. One of the militants was identified as Jayanta Handique alias Jyotish who had surrendered but was arrested for returning to the ULFA and was out on bail.

Itanagar, November 27 (PTI): The two-day literary event- MATRIX 2011, organized by the North East Writers Forum (NEWF) began here today with 25 authors from different states of North East participating in the literary sessions to celebrate the spirit of north east as well creativity. Literature is the mirror of society through which knowledge, history and culture are preserved through ages, commented Arunachal Pradesh Planning, Finance and PWD Minister Chowna Mein after inaugurating the event. Advocating for encouraging the budding writers of the state through such conclaves, the minister said that the present trend of literature movement in the state was started by Lummer Dai, an eminent writerand being carried forward by Y. D. Thongchi and Mamang Dai. Arunachal Pradesh in particular and the North East in general is rich in oral literature tradition which need to be translated and documented, Mein said while assuring governments support for preservation of indigenous manuscripts, documentation of folklores and oral literature.
Four skulls recovered in Nalbari
Nalbari (Assam), November 27 (PTI): Four skulls, including those of a woman and three children, were recovered from a paddy field at Simulia in Nalbari dsitrict today, police said. The skulls were spotted by farmers while they were working in the field this morning. The farmers informed the police who took custody of the skulls and sent those to the forensic laboratory for test. Police suspected that the skulls could be of people killed outside, but buried in the field. They might have been dug out by animals grazing in the area.
