Sikkim declared disaster affected state
Gangtok, November 30 (PTI): Sikkim has been officially declared as a 'Disaster Affected State' by the government to avail soft loans and other facilities from banks, official sources said today. It was also to source funds from international funding agencies such as the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank, the sources said. Banks and international agencies had been approached by the state government for rebuilding efforts following the large-scale damages to infrastructure during the earthquake of September 18, they said.
Seven killed, several injured in Assam road accident
Rangia, November 30 (PTI): Seven persons of a family were killed and several others injured in a road accident at Baihata in lower Assam's Kamrup (Rural) district on Wednesday morning. The car in which the seven people were coming from upper Assam collided with a Tezpur-Guwahati bus on National Highway 52, police said. As both the vehicles were travelling at high speed, under the impact of the collision, the car was dragged for about 40 metres and a portion of the vehicle completely crushed. Several bus passengers received simple injuries and they were released after being administered first-aid in nearby health centres.
Aerosport training institute in Mizoram
Aizawl, November 30 (PTI): An Aero-sport Training Institute would soon be established in Mizoram for promotion of adventure tourism and aero-sport, an official statement said today. Inaugurating the first Paragliding Festival and Spot Landing Competition at Serchhip yesterday, Mizoram tourism secretary B Sairengpuii said, "Adventure sports would be given emphasis to boost tourism and also to meet the sporting aspirations of the youth in the state." The Paragliding Festival and Spot Landing Competition was attended by 38 sportspersons including 18 from Nepal, 10 from Sikkim, six from Mizoram, two from Himachal Pradesh and one each from Sweden and Maharashtra, the statement said.
Arunachal CM promises road connectivity for Tali
Itanagar, November 30 (PTI): It must have been years since un-connected Tali in remote Kurung Kumey district of Arunachal Pradesh had anything to cheer about. The circle headquarter yesterday had the opportunity to break the jinx with Chief Minister Nabam Tuki announcing to work, even in his individual capacity, for development of the area. Incidentally, Tali has the distinction of being the only assembly constituency in the country that does not have a single road reaching it. Next time I promise to come by road to Tali, Tuki announced to a cheering crowd of panchayat leaders, gaon buras, villagers and students, official sources said here today. He directed the concerned engineer to immediately initiate the tendering process for construction of the Kamla bridge on the Yangte-Tali road. The chief minister also directed that the bridge should not be of a temporary structure but a concrete and permanent one.
LLIN nets to be distributed to BLP families in Mizoram
Aizawl, November 30 (PTI): Mizoram Health Minister Lalrinliana Sailo today flagged off one lakh Long Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN) to be distributed to BPL families in the malaria invest rural areas. The LLINs would be distributed in selected villages and each BPL family would receive two nets. The nets, received from the National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme, New Delhi would be distributed free of costs to the selected families through the Fever Treatment Depot or by the Social Health activists and community health volunteers of the Christian Medical Association of India, health department officials said. The officials claimed that malarial deaths have declined sharply after distribution of the LLINs since 2009.
Tripura government opposes FDI in retail
Agartala, November 30 (IANS): The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Front government in Tripura Wednesday urged the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to revoke its decision to allow foreign equity in retail, a minister said here. Tripura Food and Civil Supplies Minister Manik Dey told reporters: "If the UPA government allows 51 percent foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail and 100 percent in single brand retail, livelihood of over 22 crore small traders and people would be directly hit." "The UPA government in 2009 had sought views of all state governments regarding whether to allow foreign equity in retail business in India. The Tripura government that time too opposed the move," said Dey, a CPI-M leader.
