The All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) urged the Director of Education (S), Government of Manipur, "to retain the Class I -IX examinations schedules as normally followed in the previous academic sessions".
In respect of the Notification issued by the Education (S) department dated November 8, 2022 regarding change of Class I -IX examinations schedule of all schools including private un-aided schools in the state for the current academic session, 2022-23,
Accordingly, the Union on November 16 submitted a memorandum today to the Director of Education (S) regarding a notification issued by the department regarding change of Class I-IX examinations schedule of all schools including private un-aided schools in the state for the current academic session, 2022-23.
The change of examination schedules is causing unrest in the management of the schools in the hills as the academic calendar/activities of one academic session are normally planned at the onset of a session and executed accordingly throughout a session, ATSUM stated in the memorandum.
Schools in the hills had already fixed their examination schedules of the current academic session (2022-23) as planned, and the students are taught with extra classes to cover up the deficits caused by COVID-19 pandemic, it highlighted.
"As such, immediate change of examination schedule by extending the academic period for another three/four months is likely to cause extra burden to the management, parents and psychological pressure to the students," the apex tribal student body of Manipur added.
It further pointed out that most of the important events of the hills like religious, social, traditional and cultural events and activities in the form of Christmas and New Year celebrations, send off parties and marriage ceremonies, dedication of monoliths, church events etc normally take place from December to February.
"However, the change of examination schedules as notified by the Education(s) department tends to disrupt the religious, cultural and societal order of the hill districts," it added.
In this connection, while appreciating the initiatives of the Education(S) department to facilitate quality education in the state by compensating the learning loss due to COVID-19 pandemic, the ATSUM stated: "Considering the plight of the schools management, parents and students of the hills, requests your office to kindly retain the Class I -IX examinations schedules as normally followed in the previous academic sessions.”
