DIMAPUR | OCTOBER 22 : Adviser sericulture and co-operation, Azheto Zhimomi on Saturday exhorted the students of Unity College Dimapur to rise above the mediocrity of being “not so good and not so bad” if they have to be successful in life and “strive for excellence” as the college’s motto suggested.
“In today’s world of stiff competition, there is virtually no place for mediocrity,” Azheto said and urged the young people to contribute their part to the society. He said people can work together to salvage the society from decadence and build better tomorrow. He called upon the gathering to be responsible to the needs of the society even as they continue to pursue different goals in life.
Azheto said he was impressed that the College, within a short of five years, has witnessed a quantum leap of progress in terms of academic report and infrastructural developments. “Unity College Dimapur is indeed one fast developing and now a first-rate progressive centre of learning in the state,” he said and appreciated the governing body, principal, teaching faculty, staff and the students for the
progress.
Azheto, who graced the occassion as the chief guest on behalf of minister for roads and bridges G. Kaito Aye conveyed the minister’s inability to attend the programme and regretted the inconvenience caused.
Presenting the academic report, principal of the college, Dr. S. K. Chhabra highlighted the achievements of the college which he said has been making significant strides in all aspects. He said that the students have brought laurels to the college by winning in the collegiate debate competition and achieving other feats in the field of sports. The principal said that allied courses such as NIIT certified computer courses, IGNOU study centre etc were initiated in the college to promote value based education and empower and equip the students in a competitive world.
He attributed the achievements of the college to the teaching, non-teaching staff, governing board and the students. The College which was established in 2007 has a student enrolment of 520 at present. The college has 22 full time faculty lecturers out of which three are Ph.D degre holders.
Pariamentary secretary, Y. Patton, chairman Marcofed, C. L. John, chairman Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency, L. Temjen Jamir, MLA Toshipokba were among the other dignitaries present at the programme.
Earlier, Azheto and other dignitaries inaugurated the conference hall, computer lab of the college and released the college magazine.
Dean of students, Aketoli S. Sumi chaired the programme which saw varieties of entertainment programmes such as singing and presentation of ethnic wears of different communities. Later in the afternoon, a programme titled, “Extravaganza” was held during which Neire Kire was crowned Mr. Fresher’s while Mercy Lotha was crowned Miss Fresher’s.
