Last two days the local papers have carried news item of Ms Chekrovolu Swuro’s winning of Silver Medals in team events in the World Archery Championship 2011 at Turin, Italy that makes all of us proud and elated. The winning of the Silver medals also made the Country qualified to the 2012 London Olympic but it does not mean that the same winning players shall constitute the next Olympic team. There was an error in the news that she has been selected for the 2012 London Olympic. Ms Chekrovolu at the moment is among the top three ranked archer in the country and is surely among the probable for the 2012 London Olympics. The Nagaland Post have well explained the Rules regarding the selection of final list, inter alia, that winning a slot for the country and winning slot for individual are of two different elements. Procedurally probable are called and after intensive residential coaching camp trials are conducted for final selection. 2012 London Summer Olympic is about a year away hence final selection trials may be next year only.
There are number of physical and mental factors that would determine and influence the outcome of the final selection trail. Obviously one has to be in top form so also all the other too. The right frame of mind, neither agitated nor any tension but a relaxed mind. Further the rightly suited equipment and the ambient atmospheric condition at the very moment when the arrow is released. Unfortunately, against all the odds Ms. Chekrovolu fights alone, there never is a single soul at the venue to cheer and encourage her to boost her spirit. Perhaps this time during the final selection trial some of us would go to the trial venue to cheer her and boost morale support so that she exudes full confidence in her. We should also uphold in our prayer that Almighty God give her strength and confidence and help her perform well.
Regarding the irony the Morung Express rued about Dr T Ao and Ms Chekrovolu that the achievement of the former is attributed by Assam as their own and the later having represented Jharkhand State, I would like to clarify that in 1948 Dr T. Ao had represented India from Assam Province as there was no Nagaland State by then. As a student, while doing Intermediate Science at Cotton College Guwahati he played for Maharana Athletics Club and later while doing Medicine at Calcutta he played for the great Mohan Bhagan Club. True, they still conjure and revered the name of T. Ao as their own having established too deep a bond of love to fade away by mere efflux of time.
As for Ms Chekrovolu, she was picked by the Tata Academy at her formative years and was with them for 3 years at the Tata Academy Jamshedpur therefore as a matter of formalities registered as Jharkhand players and represented Jharkhand state at the 31st National Games Imphal. Incidentally, Nagaland Olympic Association was not eligible to participate in National Games by then pending grant of affiliation by the IOA. At the end of her stint of three years training at the Tata Academy Ms. Chekrovolu returned to the state and have played for the State in all the Nationals tournaments and also in the 32nd National Games Guwahati and 33rd National Games 2010 Jharkhand. Her representing Jharkhand is thing of the past but full credit goes to her for anchoring the state Women team qualifying for the past 32 and 33 rd Nationals Games. Let us give them due recognition and honour that they have earned.
