In a significant political development, seven legislators of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have officially merged with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), raising the ruling party’s strength in the 60-member Assembly from 25 to 32.

The announcement was made by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and NDPP legislator, KG Kenye, during a press conference held late on Friday evening. “We have been joined by a few more friends into the NDPP party force this evening,” Kenye stated, confirming the merger.

Providing context, the minister noted that there are nine political groups represented in the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, with the NCP being the third-largest group with seven MLAs. On Friday evening, the NCP legislators submitted a formal merger application to the Speaker of the Assembly.

“The Speaker has been kind enough to activate all his staff and has formally accepted their full-time merger into the NDPP,” Kenye said.

The seven NCP legislators who joined the NDPP include Namri Nchang (6- Tening A/C), Er Picto Shohe (32- Atoizu A/C), Deputy Speaker S. Toiho Yeptho (33-Suruhoto A/C), Y. Mhonbemo Hümtsoe (38- Wokha Town A/C), Y. Mankhao Konyak (46 Mon Town A/C), A. Pongshi Phom (50-Longleng A/C), and Puthai Longon (56-Noklak A/C).

In the 2023 Nagaland Assembly election, the NDPP secured 25 seats while the NCP had won seven. With this merger, the NDPP now commands a majority of 32 members in the House.
