Imphal | November 2 : The longest ever fasting in the world being launched by Irom Chanu Sharmila demanding the repeal of the controversial Armed Forces (Special powers) Act, 1958 from the state of Manipur, has completed 11 years on November 2, 2011.
Sharmila, the "Iron Lady" launched her movement on November 2, 2000 after the Malom massacre where ten innocent people were killed by Assam Rifles personnel, an incident which showed a clear evidence of misused of power by the Indian security forces, according to some human rights activists.
Family members of the innocent victims and leaders of some civil organizations paid floral tributes to the departed souls of Malom massacre at the scene where they lost their lives on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Just Peace Foundation, a trust inaugurated a five-day long function to commemorate the day when Sharmila completed 11 years of fasting today at Manipur Dramatic Union hall at Yaiskul, Imphal.
Irom Shingajit, brother of Sharmila said since the promulgation of AFSPA, 1958 in the State the people of Manipur have been facing various kinds of problems. Both the central and State governments remained in deaf despite various forms of movement and struggles have been launched by different NGOs to scrap the black law from the State.
He termed the agitation launched by a group of elderly women who protested against the killing of Thangjam Monorama in front of Kangla fort here in nude as a rare movement in the history of mankind. Singhajit also reminded the incident when Pebam Chitaranjan died in self immolation to protest against the Act.Just Peace Foundation said on November 5, people across India will fast in support of Sharmila’s struggle.
