Imphal | September 12 : While Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) has warned the state government to fulfill its demand within a month; International Manipur Mothers’ Association (IMMA) said such an unbending stand could lead to ugly turn in the state.
“If justice is not done within a month…we will leave no room for tolerance thereafter,” stated a memorandum submitted by SHDDC to chief minster O Ibobi Singh dated September 11, 2011, a copy of which has also been forward to the Prime Minister, Union home minister, the state governor, chairman Hill Area Committee (HAC) and the chief secretary of Manipur.
Observing that the demand for a full fledged Sadar Hills district is completely justified under Manipur (Hills Areas) Autonomous District Council Act, 1971, an act of Parliament promulgated on December 26, 1971, the SHDDC pleaded “for justice to be done equally on the Sadar Hills autonomous district too as it has been done to other hill districts.”
The SHDDC noted that the delay in the implementation of the act of 1971 has denied the people of the administrative area their rights. “Since those political decision and administrative and developmental rights have been unduly denied to us for such a long time (39 years), the people of Sadar Hills have every right to unflinchingly ask of the state government to do the needful,” stated the memorandum jointly signed by its president and general secretary Ngamkhohao Haokip and Tonghen Kipgen respectively.
Accusing the state government of reacting “haphazardly” to the present impasse that has been paralyzing the national highways for the past 43 unbroken days, the memorandum noted that “what could have been solved as a developmental matter has already been politicized thereby paving way for unsolicited political bargaining from all interested groups in the state.”
“To prolong to such an unreasonable situation will tantamount to chaotic political situation and disintegrate our unity,” it sounded caution. “The political interests espoused by different communities of the state will erupt into an unhealthy political condition if the report of the ‘Committee on Reorganization of Administrative and Police District Boundaries’ is to be implemented,” asserted the SHDDC memorandum.
Ominously, RK Khuman Leima, president of IMMA also commented as much about the fragile social fabric when she told a press conference near here today that the present impasse has could to serious problem. “If the government could not pursue SHDDC and United Naga Council (UNC) to call off the economic blockades on national highways and ease the burden of inflation on the general public, there is the potential of inviting ugly situation” she said and appealed to the striking parties to call of the agitation in the interest of the people of the state.
