The Sungkomen Ward surveillance camera activation and dedication programme was held on May 31, at Peniel Hall, Sungkomen Baptist Church, Mokokchung. A total of 16 surveillance cameras were installed across strategic points in the ward. The initiative is aimed at boosting community vigilance and curbing anti-social behaviour in the locality.

Temsukaba Kichu, Advisor to the Sungkomen Youth Organization (SYO) and Convenor of the Surveillance Camera Installation Committee, explained that the concept was initially proposed in 2022 during Tsükjemwabang’s tenure as SYO president. It gained official traction in December 2024 when the ward Yimden formally adopted it as an agenda item during their General Meeting.

To raise funds for the project, a three-day fundraising feast was organized on December 12, 13, and 14, drawing community participation and support.

Acknowledging the collaborative spirit of the effort, Kichu thanked the neighboring Tongdentsüyong Ward councillors and youth, the Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT), and the Dilong Youth Association for their contributions. He emphasized that surveillance cameras had become a necessity to monitor suspicious activities and maintain public awareness.

He further noted that the project required not only financial backing but also logistical infrastructure such as electrification, Wi-Fi connectivity, and appropriate camera locations. “Seven households generously offered their homes to host the cameras and equipment,” Kichu said, expressing gratitude to the residents for their support.

Kichu, acknowledging that some other wards have already installed surveillance systems, expressed hope that all 18 wards in Mokokchung would eventually adopt similar initiatives for the collective safety and well-being of the town’s citizens.

Yangerjungba, Chairman of Sungkomen Ward, praised SYO for taking the lead in realizing the long-envisioned initiative. “Although the idea was introduced in 2022, financial limitations delayed its execution. But with the unwavering support of the Yimden, SYO carried the initiative forward, and today we witness its success,” he stated.

He also commended Sungkomen Baptist Church for its continuous involvement, describing it as a “socially concerned church” and attributing the ward’s effective functioning in part to the church’s support.

SYO President Imrongkumba Aier also expressed appreciation to the committee and all contributors. In a statement, the youth organization described the installation as a bold move to foster public safety.

“This initiative marks a bold step forward in our mission to strengthen community safety and accountability. With the installation of surveillance systems, we aim to empower our residents and deter unlawful activities, reinforcing a culture of vigilance and responsibility,” the statement read.
