
Kohima, May 9 (MExN): Minister for Planning & Coordination, Veterinary & Animal Husbandry, Evaluation & Parliamentary Affairs TR Zeliang impressed upon the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to expedite the establishment of Veterinary College in Nagaland as per the assurance of Director General, ICAR during the 19th Regional Committee meeting at Gangtok, Sikkim in 2009.
He also urged upon the ICAR to expedite establishment of 3 KVKs in Nagaland district of Kiphire, Longleng and Peren.
The minister stated this at the 20th Regional Committee meeting-III which took place at Umium, Meghalaya from May 5 to 7 last.
H.K. Khulu, APC & principal secretary, Agriculture, Nagaland who also spoke at the meeting, urged for introducing cold tolerant varieties of crops, particularly paddy for higher altitudes of Nagaland.
He also suggested the ICAR to fill up the vacant posts of scientists at ICAR Centre, Jharnapani at the earliest for dissemination of new technologies developed to the farming community.
A.Y. Ovung, director of Agriculture, Nagaland also expressed concern over the delay in sanctioning three new KVKs in Nagaland.
The director of Agriculture along with two joint directors of agriculture Dipak Chetri and N. Tekatoshi Ao also participated in KVK interface chaired by the DG, ICAR.
The meeting was inaugurated by Meghalaya Governor R.S. Mooshary. The meeting was attended by deputy chief minister for Meghalaya, minister for Agriculture, Horticulture & Soil Conservation of Mizoram, minister of Agriculture Manipur and minister of Planning & Coordination Nagaland.
Agriculture scientist from ICAR New Delhi led by secretary, DARE (GoI) and director general ICAR Dr. S. Ayyapan, vice chancellor of AAU and CAU, Imphal, scientist from all the ICAR Regional Centres of NE states and official from the agriculture and allied departments of 8 NE states attended the meeting.
