To promote value addition and enhance the skills of Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Sankiton village under Wokha district, a training programme was conducted under the initiative of the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM), Wozhuro Block.

The programme was facilitated by the Block Area Coordinator (Livelihoods–Farm), Yanthanroni P. Yanthan, with Certified Food Processor, Youhana Murry, as the resource person, representing “Yuthi Delight”, a brand recently launched by the District Administration, Wokha. The training was held at the community hall in Sankiton village.

The training was organised in view of the village’s Producer Group, which has adopted banana as its main component. The session focused on value addition, market linkages, and the utilisation of banana for developing by-products.

During the practical demonstration, the trainer taught participants how to prepare banana stem juice, noted for its numerous health benefits such as aiding in the removal of kidney stones, detoxifying the body, and improving digestion. She also demonstrated the making of banana chips, banana flower pickle, and dried banana candy.

The villagers expressed gratitude to the department and the trainer for imparting valuable knowledge on processing and product diversification. They shared that earlier, banana stems were used only as pig feed, but through the training, they have now learned how these by-products can serve as an additional source of income and help sustain their livelihoods ensuring that nothing from the banana plant goes to waste.
