Kohima, September 5 (MExN): On the occasion of Teachers’ Day on Saturday, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Department of School Education (DoSE), and NagaEd honoured two teachers with the School Safety Excellence Award for translating disaster preparedness into regular practice.
The awards were conferred during the state-level Teachers’ Day celebration upon Nukshitemjen, Physical Training (PT) Teacher at Government High School (GHS), Kubolong in Mokokchung district, and Wanglem W Konyak, Primary Teacher and Scout Master at Holy Angel’s School, Tizit Town in Mon district.
Both educators were recognised for sustaining school safety activities following their completion of the Nagaland Disaster Management School Safety Policy Compliance Course. Nukshitemjen was acknowledged for conducting continuous awareness drives and practical disaster management demonstrations at GHS Kubolong. Wanglem W Konyak led school-wide earthquake mock drills at Holy Angel's School, training students in "drop, cover, and hold," orderly evacuation, first aid, and assembly protocols. Both schools had participated in Phase 1 of the compliance course in 2024.
Highlighting Nagaland's location in a high-risk seismic zone, NSDMA Joint CEO Dr Johnny Ruangmei stated that while the state formulates policies and funds training, practical preparedness depends on teachers embedding safety routines into daily school life.
The compliance programme, launched by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in December 2023, aligns with the National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) National School Safety Guidelines across government and private institutions. Since 2024, the School Safety Excellence Awards have recognised 10 schools, with this edition shifting focus to individual teachers.
Kevisato Sanyü, Founder of NagaEd, remarked that the initiative aims to shift disaster response from theoretical knowledge to routine muscle memory through regular drills.
According to officials, nearly 12,000 teachers have enrolled across the programme's first two phases. Phase 1 logged 7,567 registrations and 3,193 certifications, while cumulative registrations reached nearly 12,000 in Phase 2, with half of the enrollees certified.
NagaEd Head of Projects & Learning Excellence Aonok Aier noted that preparations are underway for Phase 3 to further expand institutional coverage and build disaster-resilient school environments across the state.
