The United Naga Council (UNC) Peace Committee has reiterated that there is a strong need for the Central Government and the Manipur State Government to be serious in their measures. “We are greatly saddened by the killings,” it stated.
In a statement issued to Newmai News Network today, the UNC Peace Committee said it “strongly believes” that to any problem, there should be a solution anywhere and everywhere. The seriousness of the central government and the state government on the prevailing situation in Manipur is the need of the hour, it stated.
In last November, the peace committee had said, “Since both the warring communities are facing difficulties to come together to a dialogue table at this moment towards making a sort of a ‘joint declaration’ to halt violence, the committee feels that, somehow someone, either the Meitei community or the Kuki-Zo community, must show magnanimity by unilaterally declaring to halt violence”.
In this regard, the peace committee “fervently appeals” to both the Meitei community and the Kuki-Zo community that one must be brave enough to be magnanimous and unilaterally declare “ceasefire”.
It also stated that such unilateral declaration for “ceasefire” is actually an act of bravery and magnanimity, and not otherwise. “If one community unilaterally declares 'ceasefire', the other will follow suit,” it stated and added, “the act of the one who first declares 'ceasefire' will be considered as a historic move and be remembered for generations to come.’
The statement also informed that the committee had met leaders of the Meitei community and the Kuki-Zo community separately, persuading both the communities to stop the violence.
In September last year, the committee had also urged both the State Government and the Central Government to “tirelessly work without fear and favour to ensure the rule of law.”
