Kohima, November 7 (MExN): The water supply to Niuland town, which was disrupted last month due to accidental damage during a road maintenance work, has been successfully restored.

The supply line was damaged on October 25 by the PWD (R&B) Dimapur Division during maintenance work along the Niuland-Zhadima road at 4th km. Despite PHED demarcating the pipes laid along the road, the accidental damage was caused while dumping of debris on the valley side which disrupted the town water supply, stated a DIPR report.

To address the crisis, Niuland Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Water and Sanitation Mission, Sara S Jamir, convened a joint meeting with the PHED and PWD (R&B) on November 4.

Highlighting the plight of the public and offices affected by the water shortage, the DC directed the two departments to coordinate and restore the supply within 48 hours.

Following the directive, the PHED Rural Division, Dimapur, carried out repair works on November 5 and successfully restored the water supply to the town.

In an official statement, the PHED also notified that any damage caused to components of the public water supply system shall attract penal action under Section 326(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, and the damage must be restored by the agency responsible for causing it.
