A training programme on “Agripreneurship Development through Agri & Allied Activities” was held today at Lotha Eloe Hoho Ki, Wokha, with women from different colonies of Wokha Town participating in the programme.
The programme was organised by ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Wokha, in collaboration with the Lotha Eloe Hoho, with the objective of promoting agripreneurship and creating income-generation opportunities through agriculture and allied activities.
Speaking on post-harvest management of fruits and vegetables, Megokhono Meyase, CTO (Horticulture), emphasised the importance of proper handling of fruits and vegetables after harvesting to maintain their quality, freshness, nutritional value and marketability while minimising losses.
She highlighted that fruits and vegetables are highly perishable and can deteriorate rapidly due to improper handling, mechanical injuries and microbial infections. Proper post-harvest management, she said, can help reduce qualitative and quantitative losses, maintain food safety and quality, increase shelf life and improve farmers’ income.
Meyase further pointed out that surplus and highly perishable produce can be processed into value-added products such as jams, jellies and pickles, providing additional income opportunities for farmers.
As part of the programme, Deepa Singh, SMS (Home Science), conducted a Front Line Demonstration (FLD) on “Popularisation of Papaya Tutti Frutti as a Value Added Product for Income Generation.” The demonstration focused on processing papaya into a value-added product and highlighted its potential as an additional source of income.
The training provided participating women with practical information on post-harvest management, food processing and value addition, while encouraging them to explore agribusiness opportunities using locally available agricultural produce.
