Samziuram, June 30 (MExN): A workshop on disaster management and preparedness for village leaders from Tening and Athibung blocks of Peren district was held at the Samziuram Village Council Hall on June 30.
The programme was organised by Pro Rural with support from Brot für die Welt (BftW) and co-hosted by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Home Guards and Civil Defence, and Fire Station, Jalukie.
According to a press release, the workshop brought together representatives of government departments, village councils, farmer producer organisations (FPOs), women and youth organisations, community members and project beneficiaries to strengthen disaster preparedness, emergency response and community resilience.
Delivering the welcome address, Paul Lokho, Director of Pro Rural, highlighted the increasing vulnerability of rural communities to natural disasters and stressed the need to strengthen local capacities through awareness, collaboration and practical preparedness.
He also informed participants that Pro Rural has become an approved DonateKart-Amazon partner for emergency disaster relief in Northeast India, enabling affected families to receive relief kits within 72 hours during disasters such as floods, landslides, fires and cyclones.
Earlier, Lesehu Meru, Project Manager of the BftW-Pro Rural project, presented an overview of the project's objectives, achievements and ongoing efforts to build resilient communities. He underscored the importance of integrating disaster risk reduction into community development initiatives.
The technical session was led by Kedigong, District Project Associate, DDMA Peren, who spoke on disaster risk reduction, preparedness measures, early warning systems and the role of community leaders in emergency response. He also encouraged villages to constitute Village Disaster Management Authorities (VDMAs) to identify local hazards and strengthen emergency preparedness.
Officials from the Home Guards and Civil Defence Department conducted a practical session on emergency response and first aid, demonstrating life-saving techniques, including bleeding control, patient handling and the use of improvised resources during emergencies.
Personnel from Fire Station, Jalukie, also conducted a fire safety demonstration covering fire prevention measures, evacuation procedures and the correct use of firefighting equipment.
A press release from Pro Rural informed that the programme concluded with an interactive discussion and question-and-answer session, during which participants shared experiences and discussed ways to strengthen collaboration between government agencies, civil society organisations and local communities in disaster risk reduction.
According to the organisers, the workshop reaffirmed a shared commitment to promoting community-led disaster preparedness and resilience-building initiatives.
