The two chapters of the Working Committee, Naga National Political Groups (WC, NNPGs) and the NSCN (IM) would likely share the same podium at the public rally hailed as the Naga Youth Movement scheduled on June 27 under the banner of the Fed-Up Nagas.
The organisers of the rally, to be held at the Agri Expo, 4th Mile, Chümoukedima, told a press conference, on June 26, that leaders from the three Naga political entities— Kitovi Zhimomi-led WC, NNPGs; Neokpao-Alezo-led WC, NNPGs and NSCN (IM) are expected to address the gathering. No names were however revealed.
Originally planned to take place at the Naga Shopping Arcade, the venue was shifted to the Agri Expo citing security concerns. The rally is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm. “Due to so many reasons, especially security reasons, we have to shift the venue. We apologize to everyone for any inconvenience caused,” Kuhoto Naga, a member of the Fed-Up Nagas said.
According to the organisers, the intention of the democratic movement is to pressure and demand the implementation of the Framework Agreement and the Agreed Position, which have remained in a state of suspended animation since their signings.
Kuhoto sought to clarify perceived reservations against the intent of the Fed-Up Nagas. Describing it as an independent youth movement with no institutional backing, he said, “We, the youth, are only raising our voice for our survival. We do not have any affiliation with any political party, nor are we inclined toward any particular organisation, society, or association,”
Another member Hiketo Naga asserted that the demonstration is not intended to cause internal friction. “This public rally is not meant to create division among the Nagas,” he said, urging the public to attend the event in unity.
Both maintained that decades of political uncertainty has negatively impacted every sphere of Naga life, the most glaring of which has been economic insecurity; the flux holding back the aspiration of the youth, their personal decisions and their future. According to them, this should end and the youths given the opportunity they deserve.
They said that the June 27 rally and the movement in general, is crowdfunded through small voluntary contributions and has no organisational sponsorship whatsoever. Due to limited financial resources, they have requested attendees to bring their own drinking water and umbrellas.
At the venue, there will be no VIP treatment or designated seating, ensuring that all attendees are treated equally regardless of their social, church, or professional standing. Parents, elders, students, and youth were appealed to side aside two hours of their time to support the initiative. They reiterated that the unresolved political issue directly impacts the lives of everyone in Nagaland.
