ZYF & ZSU condemn arrest of civilian by army

Imphal, December 18 (MExN): The Zeliangrong Youth Front (ZYF) and Zeliangrong Students’ Union (ZSU) have condemned the 5 unit J&K Light Infantry Regiment posted at Patsoi, Imphal for arresting a civilian. Thainingam Gonmei @ Angam, aged about 27 years, was arrested on December 16 around 2:30 pm from Patsoi area, Imphal, alleged a press statement from the two bodies.

Thainingam, a daily wage earner with two children and a wife, was “taken away” by the J&KLI Regiment “without giving any reason” while he was travelling to Tamenglong by taxi (Tata Sumo) along with other relatives, including children, according to the statement from ZSU Southern Area convenor, Shajangam Gangmei and ZYF Asst. General Secretary, Gaiganglung Golmei

“The J&KLI Regiment tortured him with third degree method including electric shock, pouring cold water on his head and face etc. as if he is a dreaded terrorist without first establishing the veracity of facts, his antecedent and his identity.”

The organizations further informed that he was handed over to Patsoi Police Station after “severe torture” and is still lodged there “after leveling with baseless and fabricated charges by the army including member of underground organization.”

Maintaining that there is “no logical ground and reason” to further detain Thainingam in the police custody, ZYF and ZSU demanded that he should be released immediately without any condition. “Failing to release him, (we) would resort to launching of democratic agitation in order to secure the rights of the innocent citizen and for the ends of justice,” they stated.
