A free dental and dermatology (skin) check up camp was conducted at Eden Medical Centre (EMC), Dimapur on May 25 and 26. Some 350 patients turned up at the camp over the two days with the EMC’s in-house dentist Dr. Ankit Jain and dermatologist Dr. Atoka Sumi screening and treating various dental and skin problems.

Procedures like tooth extraction, tooth filling and biopsy, skin tag removal, mole removal, besides diagnosing other skin conditions were done free of cost.

Acne vulgaris, steroid-induced face damage (over the counter medications), scabies, fungal infections, hair loss disorders, photo-damaged skin and various forms of pigmentations were the common skin conditions reported at the camp. To prevent such conditions, Dr. Sumi advised the use of appropriate medicated sunscreen, avoiding over-the-counter medication for skin conditions and importantly, personal hygiene. Over-the-counter ointments for rashes and fungal infections are said to contain steriods (clobetasol), which when used for prolonged periods can have adverse effects. Dr. Sumi also advised against avoid excessive usage of cosmetics.

The most common dental problems diagnosed were tooth cavities requiring root canal treatment and fillings, tooth decay, missing tooth, pan and tobacco use related stains, calculus and oral ulcers that required screening for cancer. Dr. Jain advised regular dental checkups (atleast once in 6 months), oral hygiene and avoiding tobacco products.
