Kohima, May 5 (MExN): The Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, on April 30, 2026, directed both the State of Nagaland and the Union of India to file their respective affidavits in the ongoing writ petition filed by 1,161 Hindi teachers. The teachers have alleged non-inclusion in the state cadre and salary irregularities. The matter is now listed for further hearing on June 4, 2026.
The petition has been filed by 1,161 Hindi teachers appointed in government schools across Nagaland. They allege prolonged delays in salary payments despite being regular appointees. The petitioners have also raised concerns over denial of parity with other state employees, non-inclusion in the state cadre, and lack of financial security.
In a press release, the Convenor of CSS Hindi Teachers stated that during the latest hearing before Justice Pranjal Das on April 30, 2026, Sourjya Das, counsel appearing for the petitioners, submitted on behalf of the large body of teachers. The Court noted that the respondents, including the State government and Centre, have yet to file their affidavits.
The Additional Advocate General appearing for the State sought time to obtain instructions, following which the Court directed both the State and the Centre to file their affidavits before the next date of hearing. Taking note of the submissions, the Court ordered: “Respondents shall take necessary instructions and file their respective affidavits, if any, for proper adjudication of the matter.”
Significantly, both the State of Nagaland and the Central Government are now expected to file their affidavits on or before the next date of hearing, the release added.
The High Court had earlier issued notice to the State and the Centre after hearing the matter, marking the beginning of judicial scrutiny into the teachers’ grievances. The matter is now scheduled to be taken up on June 4, 2026.
