The District Congress Committee (DCC) Mokokchung on Wednesday clarified the recent controversy over the reported en masse resignation of party office-bearers and workers, alleging that signatures in the resignation list had been forged.
Addressing a press conference at DCC Bhavan, Mokokchung, DCC Vice-President Nukshi I Ozukum said an investigation into the matter was underway. He claimed that the committee had so far identified 12 names on the list whose signatures appeared to have been forged or whose names were included without their knowledge or consent.
“The DCC strongly condemns this,” Ozukum said, adding that the committee would pursue the matter “till the end.” He said more cases could emerge as the investigation continues.
Three persons whose names appeared on the list also attended the press conference. They stated that they had no prior knowledge of the alleged resignation and maintained that their signatures had been forged. They expressed unhappiness over their names being drawn into the controversy without their consent.
Responding to claims that the DCC Mokokchung president had been removed before his tenure was completed, Ozukum said the leadership change was part of a wider organisational exercise initiated by the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
He said the AICC had informed party leaders during a meeting in Ahmedabad last year that organisational changes could be made at any time as part of preparations for the 2029 elections. According to him, the decision followed an evaluation and assessment by an AICC observer.
Ozukum said the former DCC president did not meet the prescribed criteria, including the age criterion, as he was above 70 years. He maintained that the change was not specific to Mokokchung but was part of a nationwide process to revamp the Congress organisation.
He further said that all frontal organisations of the Congress in Mokokchung district remained intact.
The clarification came after reports that 61 office-bearers and workers of the Indian National Congress from Mokokchung district had submitted an en masse resignation from their party posts and primary membership, citing alleged “autocratic functioning” and “mismanagement” by the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee leadership.
