15th Lotha Football Championship 2026 underway at Wokha

The inaugural ceremony of the 15th Lotha Football Championship 2026 was held on January 28, at the Public Ground, Wokha, marking the formal commencement of one of the most anticipated sporting events in the district.

The programme was graced by Chumlamo Humtsoe, ADC, Satakha and Co-Owner of Doyang Strikers FC, as the Inaugural Guest, while W Myingthungo Kikon, Chairperson, Wokha Town Council (WTC), attended the ceremony as the Special Invitee.

The ceremony began with the arrival and line-up of players, followed by the hoisting of the tournament flag by the Inaugural Guest.

Addressing the gathering, Humtsoe emphasised the vital role of sports in fostering discipline, unity, character building and healthy competition, especially among the youth. He highlighted that the launch of the Nagaland Super League (NSL) has given a significant boost to football in the state, opening up wider exposure and greater opportunities for local footballers to showcase their talent at higher platforms.

Likewise, he encouraged players to stay focused, work hard and remain committed to continuous improvement, stating that success in football comes not only from talent but also from dedication, discipline and teamwork. He further urged football lovers, supporters and well-wishers to come forward collectively to support local players, stressing that strong community backing plays a crucial role in helping athletes progress to higher levels.

Reiterating the spirit of the game, he called upon the players to uphold sportsmanship and fair play, and urged the players to use the championship as a platform for personal growth, unity and positive competition, noting that football has the power to inspire, connect people and shape future leaders.

In his address, Special Invitee W Myingthungo Kikon spoke on the values of discipline, teamwork, perseverance, focus, sportsmanship, physical fitness and adaptability, both on and off the field. He acknowledged that organising a tournament of such magnitude is never an easy task and expressed his appreciation to the Wokha District Football Association (WDFA) for their consistent efforts in promoting football and providing opportunities for young talents in the district.

At the same time, he urged players to give their best while maintaining respect for opponents, officials and spectators, and called upon the audience to encourage all teams in a positive spirit. Highlighting football’s role in strengthening community bonds, he expressed hope that the championship would continue to nurture talent and contribute to the growth of a vibrant sporting culture in Wokha district.

The programme was chaired by Amos Odyuo, Tournament Secretary, while the ceremonial and championship blessing was pronounced by Zubenthung Ngullie, Pastor, PBC Wokha. The Presidential Address was delivered by N Samuel Ezung, President, WDFA, who outlined the objectives of the championship and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to the development and promotion of football in the district.

The ceremony also featured an interlude by Emily Murry, adding colour to the programme. The Fair Play Pledge was administered by Athungo Erui, Member, Technical Committee, urging all teams and officials to uphold integrity, respect and fairness throughout the tournament.

The Inaugural Ceremony concluded with the official declaration of the 15th Lotha Football Championship 2026, signalling the start of competitive matches and a celebration of football in Wokha district.

Opening Day Highlights

Yon Sporting Club registered their first win of the championship with a commanding victory over Emirates FC. M Yongsen opened the scoring in the 5th minute, setting the tone for the match, followed by Sentisang doubling the lead at the 24th minute and Sachamo Yanthan adding another at the 35th minute.

Emirates FC responded with a goal by Phyobemo Kithan at the 38th minute, but Yon Sporting Club quickly regained control as Sentisang netted his second goal at the 41st minute. The match was sealed in stoppage time when Mhachio scored at 70+1 minutes, capping off a dominant performance by Yon Sporting Club.

In the second match of the day, Nyiro Range Football Club secured their first win of the tournament against Airfield Colony FC. Jangganglung gave Nyiro Range an early lead in the 25th minute, which was promptly equalised by Vizo for Airfield Colony FC at the 27th minute. The decisive goal came in the 43rd minute when Mhao struck to hand Nyiro Range FC a well-earned victory.
