LCYO and Highlander have advanced to the semifinals of the ongoing 29th T20 Winter Cricket Challenge, following their dominant victories in the quarterfinals at the local ground in Wokha.
The tournament is being held under the aegis of the Nagaland Cricket Association and organized by the Senior Noble Klan.
In the first quarterfinal, LCYO faced off against Comets CC. After winning the toss, Comets CC opted to bat first and were bowled out for 137 runs in 19.4 overs. Key contributions came from Renben Kikon (21), Nchumbemo Kikon (32), and Thungchamo (26).
However, the tailenders failed to provide significant support, leading to their early collapse.
LCYO responded in style, with a strong opening partnership between Nzanthung (23) and Renbemo (58), who together put on 81 runs. The pair set a blistering pace during the powerplay, with both openers finding the boundaries with ease. After their dismissals, Lijanbemo (31 not out) guided LCYO to victory in just 14.1 overs, securing a six-wicket win. Faizul Haque was the standout bowler for Comets CC, taking two wickets for just 10 runs. Renbemo was named Man of the Match for his crucial 58-run contribution.
In the second quarterfinal, Highlander took on Kohima Hornbills after winning the toss and opting to bowl. Kohima Hornbills struggled to set a challenging total, managing only 109 runs before being bowled out in 18.5 overs. The top order crumbled early, leaving the team at a precarious 45/5 in the 7th over. Despite a steadying 26-run knock from Vitoshe and 15 from Lanu, the Hornbills’ innings fell short. Hiketo Aye was the pick of the bowlers for Highlander, claiming 4 wickets for 23 runs, with Shamphri supporting with 2 wickets for 20 runs.
In reply, Highlander wasted no time in chasing down the modest target. A blazing start from Hiketo Aye and Shamphri, who together put on 35 runs in the first two overs, set the tone. Despite the rare occurrence of Asif Wasim being timed out—a first in the history of the Winter Cricket Challenge—the Highlander batsmen stayed calm and completed the chase in just 11.1 overs. Anguka remained unbeaten on 25 to lead them to a 5-wicket victory. Anga was the lone bright spot for Kohima Hornbills with the ball, taking 2 wickets for 32 runs. Hiketo Aye was named Man of the Match for his all-round performance.
