3rd Edition of Nagaland Potato Festival on May 15

Even as the demand for local and organic produce continues to grow, the 3rd Edition of Nagaland Potato Festival is scheduled to be held at Jakhama Village Ground on May 15. The past two editions have drawn a lot of interest with the first edition alone generating about 15 lakhs of rupees from different stalls that exhibited and sold a variety of organic vegetables. 

22000 kgs of potatoes were sold during the first edition of Nagaland Potato Festival, it was informed during a press conference held at The Guardian, Kohima Trade Center on May 12 by the organisers comprising Dr. Teputo Richa, Coordinator, Kevithüzo Tase, Co-convenor, Vikehiezo Kulnu, Coordinator, and Kikokhü Richa, Event Manager. 

Briefing the media, Dr. Teputo Richa, Coordinator said that the sole purpose of organising the event is to promote local entrepreneurs and farmers and further build market linkages for them through networking. 

During the Festival, he also highlighted that trainings would be simultaneously held for farmers and those interested. These include "Demonstration on usage of bio-fertilisers in seeds, seedling root dip and soil treatment" by Bio-Lab, Medziphema, "Certification/ Training on how to get access to government schemes and financial benefits" by YouthNet, "Demonstration on banana chips" by ATMA, "Workshop on Coffee Plantation" by Department of Land Resources, "Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme (EAP) with special reference to CMMFI" by Investment & Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN), and "National Livestock Schemes" by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services respectively. 

The Festival which is being organised by Jakhama Village Council will see the active participation of all the eight khels of Jakhama Village besides the participation of the neighbouring villages as well.

While the data for the second edition of Nagaland Potato Festival is not available due to low yield of potatoes, the 3rd Edition of Nagaland Potato Festival promises to deliver backed by this year's great harvest. 

During the Festival, a tin of organic potatoes will be priced at ₹700. Besides potatoes, there will be sales and exhibition of other organic vegetables and locally produced products from Nagaland.
