Shamator, August 4 (MExN): The fourth Metümnyo Festival Football Tournament, organised by the Sangphur Village Students’ Union in association with the Shamator District Football Association (SDFA) and sponsored by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports, Nagaland, got underway on August 4.
Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Shamator, Athrong Yimkhiung, inaugurated the tournament.
Addressing the gathering, Yimkhiung thanked the organisers for providing a platform for young football aspirants and expressed hope that, under the guidance of the SDFA, talented players would progress to higher levels of competition.
He appreciated the efforts of the SDFA and urged the association to continue strengthening football development in the district. Stressing the importance of dedication in sports, he said talent alone was not enough to achieve success and that hard work, sacrifice and proper coaching were essential for a bright future.
SDFA Vice President Solumba thanked the Sangphur Village Students’ Union for successfully organising the tournament.
He said outstanding performers from the tournament would be selected to represent Team Shamator at the forthcoming Dr T Ao Inter-District Football Tournament, scheduled to be held in Mokokchung from October 12 to 30.
He also urged players to maintain discipline, respect the rules of the game and uphold the spirit of sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
Earlier, Sangphur Village Students’ Union President Shokheamong delivered the welcome address, while Rev Z Thsankiu, Pastor of Sangphur Village Baptist Church, dedicated the programme.
