Shamator, March 24 (MExN): Hukir Village in Shamator district solemnly observed the 71st Anniversary of the 1st Indo-Naga War (1955–2026) on March 24.

The programme, organised by the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC), brought together community leaders, church representatives and members of various Naga political groups in a day of remembrance and reflection.

The event was graced by Thejao Vihienuo, President, Angami Public Organisation as the special guest.

In his keynote address, Throngso Yimkhiung underscored the historical importance of the Indo-Naga War, urging the younger generation to preserve the legacy, sacrifices, and stories of those who fought for the Naga cause.

A significant highlight of the programme was a detailed historical record presented by Laji GS, YTC, documenting events from 1947 to 2010.

The account shed light on the contribution and participation of the Yimchungru community in the Naga movement for sovereignty.

The narrative included references to interactions with AZ Phizo, who reportedly encouraged the Yimchungru people from “free areas” to take initiative in the struggle.

The account also reflected on the designation of leadership roles such as “War Lord” and the interpretation of traditional titles like Gaon Bura.

The programme further revisited intense phases of the conflict, particularly the battles fought between 1956 and 1961 in Hoshiphu Village and Longtukrü, described as among the fiercest engagements. Tribute was paid to several fallen Naga leaders, including: Major General P. Punsokiu (killed in 1956 at Lizuto), Major General Y Hothrong (killed in 1961), Commandant W. Hothrong (killed in 1956 at Longtukrü), Commandant Muthrong (killed in 1967)

The gathering also featured an eyewitness account and a rendition of the Indo-Naga War anthem, evoking deep emotions and honoring those who lived through the conflict.

The event concluded with a collective tribute to all Naga freedom fighters, reaffirming remembrance, respect, and the enduring significance of their sacrifices.

The commemoration was attended by several Naga political leaders, reflecting unity and shared remembrance across groups.

The programme was chaired by YTC Vice President S Yansomong, while Rev Dr SJ Akhum, Executive Secretary of YBBA, delivered the obituary and invocation. Welcome address was delivered by L Kekong, Head GB of Hukir Village.
