Nearly 72% of Nagaland’s bank branches are concentrated in just four districts Dimapur, Chümoukedima, Kohima and Mokokchung  underscoring persistent regional disparities in access to formal banking services across the State.

As on March 31, 2025, a total of 249 bank branches were operating in Nagaland, supported by 383 ATMs and 995 Common Service Points (CSPs), as per the State Focus Paper (SFP) 2026-27 recently released by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Nagaland Regional Office, Dimapur.

However, 180 of these branches are located in the four districts, leaving several others with minimal coverage. Of the 76 Rural Development Blocks, 23 blocks still do not have a single bank branch.

Seven districts have fewer than five branches each, while most blocks in these districts have only one or two branches, typically located at block headquarters, the paper highlighted.

Meanwhile, the Average Population Per Bank Office (APPBO) in the State stood at 9076 as on March 31, 2025.

A total of 22 commercial banks are currently operating in Nagaland, comprising 12 public sector banks and 10 private sector banks.

Commercial banks account for the major share of deposits at Rs 7,973.08 crore out of Rs 9,111.97 crore and advances at Rs 3,334.19 crore out of Rs 4,349.18 crore in the 2025 fiscal.

The total Annual Credit Plan target for priority sector lending for commercial banks has been fixed at Rs1686.75 crore, according to the SCP.
