Maligaon, August 3 (MExN): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), through the N.F. Railway Sports Association (NFRSA), on Monday inaugurated the 72nd All India Inter Railway Table Tennis Championship (Men & Women) 2026-27 at the NFRSA Indoor Stadium, Maligaon.
The five-day championship, which will conclude on August 7, has brought together table tennis players representing various zonal railways and production units of Indian Railways.
According to NFR, the tournament is being contested by 65 men and 31 women players from railway teams across the country. Seventeen referees nominated by the Railway Board, along with two selectors and one observer, are officiating and overseeing the championship.
The competition features events in both the men’s and women’s categories, with railway sportspersons vying for top honours over the five-day tournament. The opening ceremony was attended by Additional General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway Ramesh Kumar as the chief guest.
The programme included the introduction of participating teams, the arrival of the chief guest, a welcome address by the President of the N.F. Railway Sports Association, flag hoisting, introduction of Railway Board officials, the chief guest’s address, a felicitation ceremony and the formal declaration of the championship open.
NFR said it has consistently promoted sports by providing quality infrastructure and opportunities for railway sportspersons to excel at the national and international levels.
Hosting the championship reflects the railway’s commitment to promoting sporting talent, encouraging a healthy sporting culture and fostering camaraderie among railway employees across the country, it added.
