Imphal | September 25 : Rock Music Manipur (RMM) has mobilized fund to send the surviving members of the 90s iconic heavy metal act “Post Mark” to Bangalore to witness Metallica live on stage. This gesture has been initiated by fans and members of RMM as a tribute to the metal band who is still remembered by rebellious youth of the 80s and 90s fondly and with an air of pride as the harbinger of metal music in Manipur.
A press meet by members of RMM today informed this initiative in which some of the surviving band members too participated. “You bore all the hardships of being the pioneers and paved the way for all of us. Surely you are our heroes,” is how members of RMM continue to hold forth.
“…Metallica is going to perform in October. We collectively agreed that no one deserves to watch them perform more than you do,” said the fans and added that, “all the fans of Post Mark got together and successfully raised funds to cover your travel, accommodation and concert tickets. Please accept this as a gesture of our appreciation.”
Post Mark was formed in 1988 and remained active through the tumultuous 80s and 90s. They started by performing cover songs of well known bands but soon realized that they were not happy merely singing covers. They wanted to explore the creative sides of music and began writing and composing originals. A year after the inception in 1989, the band released an original album called Stamp on You that reflected the contradiction of the era. On the one hand their songs talked about folkways and tradition, on the other they also highlighted the dilemmas of the youth in what could be described as vices of modernity.
While the band has lost their vocalist Kshetrimayum and lost contact with their guitarist Phurailatpam, rest of the surviving members of Post Mark have diversified their interests and dabbled in odd jobs for the past 15 years simply because music, particularly heavy metal, was clearly not remunerative enough in the country.
With the imminent performance of Metallica in India, members of RMM, an online mailing list group, fans of Post Mark from Manipur and other places have mobilized Rs 60,000 through the social networking site facebook to send the four surviving members of Post Mark to Metallica concert in Bangalore slated on October 30, 2011. RMM has also planned to stage a pre-show live concert with Post Mark in Bangalore before Metallica goes live. One of the members, Nongmaithem said at the press meet today that it will be a dream come true for him to be able to witness Metallica live on stage. “I have never believed that Metallica will one day perform in India. When we were active, we covered almost all their songs. So it’s definitely a big high that we are going to Bangalore,” he said.
