Accurate measurement is essential for ensuring transparency, fairness, and trust between consumers and traders, stated Khevishe Z Zhimomi, Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection (LMCP), during a consumer rights awareness programme held at Khelhoshe Polytechnic on May 12.
He was addressing the awareness programme on the theme ‘Accurate Measurement, Safe Product – Confident Consumers’ organised by the Department of LMCP.
Zhimomi further stressed that accurate measurement forms the foundation of consumer confidence and fair trade practices.
He also reminded traders and manufacturers of their obligation to comply with the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and related rules.
Resource person Easter H Yepthomi, Retainer Lawyer of the Zunheboto District Legal Services Authority (ZDLSA), spoke on the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 and highlighted that the Act came into force on July 20, 2020, to address emerging consumer challenges in the digital era and ensure timely redressal of disputes.
She also spoke on deficiency in service and informed participants that cases relating to medical negligence can be brought before the consumer redressal commission. Urging the gathering to become informed and conscious consumers, she stressed the importance of consumer rights and awareness.
The programme was chaired by Khruvelu, Head of the Civil Engineering Department, while the concluding remarks were delivered by Jandeno Jami.
