Dimapur | May 26

A case of an alleged sexual abuse of a minor has surfaced in Dimapur. The case came to light on May 23 following which the victim, a girl, was taken into protective custody by the authorities.

As per information gleaned from various sources by The Morung Express, the girl was studying at a school in Dimapur under the guardianship of a family. The accused happened to be the guardian, a married man with biological children. Citing the victim’s minor status and the sensitive nature of the alleged crime, details of the case remained shrouded in official confidentiality.

A police complaint, alleging rape of a minor, was filed against the accused, reportedly a former student activist, by a Dimapur-based tribal organisation on May 25. The police registered the complaint under relevant sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)/Indian Justice Code, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The sources said that the victim was sexually abused over an extended period of time. This information, however, could not be independently verified. The police could not be reached for comment, while the accused was reported to be absconding.
