One man accused in the alleged sexual assault of a minor in Dimapur has been taken into custody by the police. The accused, identified as Watimeren Jamir, also known as O Wati Jamir, surrendered to the police on May 27, two days after a police complaint was filed against him. The First Information Report (FIR) or complaint was registered at the Women Police Station, Dimapur.
As initially reported by The Morung Express, the complaint was filed by the Chang Union Dimapur, on behalf of the victim, on May 25. As per information gleaned from various sources, the accused had applied for anticipatory bail subsequent to the filing of the police complaint. The pre-arrest bail was rescinded by the court after his surrender and subsequent arrest.
The accused is facing charges under Sections 64, 65, 71 and 74 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)/Indian Justice Code, and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The victim, in her teens, was allegedly sexually abused over an extended period of time. This, however, remain unverified. The police have yet to come out with an official statement on the case.
