Angered at what they termed as a betrayal of their trust, various organizations burnt the effigies of the Tura MP, Agatha Sangma, after it became widely known that the MP had given her support to the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in Parliament on Monday.

The Tura MP had reportedly voted for the Bill while seeking complete exemption for the North East from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led national Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.

Meanwhile, the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) held a rally condemning the statement of the Tura MP on the issue. The rally ended at the gate of the NEHU - Tura campus with protestors shouting slogans against Agatha.

In Dainadubi, protestors, which included NGOs from Dainadubi in North Garo Hills district burnt the effigy of Agatha along with those of Union Home Minister, Amit Shah and Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on Tuesday. Similar effigies were also burnt in the town of Williamnagar in East Garo Hills district as well as in front of the office of the National People’s Party in Tura.

The anger of the NGOs comes in the wake of the NPP leadership earlier threatening to break up with the NDA over the passage of CAB.

The NGOs accused the MP of selling out Garo Hills and the sentiments of the people on the matter.
