A student body in Manipur on Thursday threatened agitation if basic requirements in state- owned university Dhanamanjuri (DM) University are not provided.
All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) alleged that the state government has failed to convert into action what was agreed upon with regards to the demand of the student body.
DM University was established under “The Dhanamanjuri University Act, 2017 “ which came into force on the April 6,2018 through a notification in Manipur Gazette published by the Department of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Manipur. The University was established under the National Scheme of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA).
Addressing a press conference at AMSU office on Thursday, AMSU HRD secretary, Bruce Pebam alleged that the varsity has been functioning without its basic requirement and infrastructure. He further alleged that the University is functioning without regular vice-chancellor, registrar for over a year now. There is no regular teaching staff and non-teaching staff, no syndicate member, academic council and it is running without a dean.
"Such lack of basic requirements to run a university has rendered the university insignificant besides giving a lot of unnecessary tough time to the students of the colleges affiliated to the university", he pointed out. "The syllabus of the university is yet to get approval from the pertinent higher authority due to non-constitution of academic council", he also said. Pebam also pointed out that since the university is not a member of the Association of Indian University, the certificates provided by the varsity will be invalid.
The varsity is also not conducting the exams on time and results are also being kept pending for a long time. "Because of this, there are several drawbacks in applying state or central sponsored scholarships," he added. He further pointed out that the notification for undergoing PhD was issued in October last year, however, no process for selection of students for admission is taken up till date.
Regarding the issues before the students of the colleges affiliated to the university and to provide the basic requirements of a varsity, AMSU had submitted a memorandum to the concerned authority.
It can be noted here that DM University is built up of the three Dhanamanjuri Colleges - DM College of Science, DM College of Arts, DM College of Commerce - along with GP Women’s College and LMS Law College, all of which occupy common, adjoining or neighbouring physical spaces.
