ANCSU and LMRSU have opposed proposal for the temporary relocation of Government Polytechnic Doyang in Wokha district following recent landslide incidents on the campus.
Dimapur, June 2 (MExN): The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) and the Lotha Middle Range Students’ Union (LMRSU) have opposed any proposal for the temporary relocation of Government Polytechnic Doyang in Wokha district following recent landslide incidents on the campus.
The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) and the Lotha Middle Range Students’ Union (LMRSU) submitted separate appeals to Chief Minister and the Director of Technical Education respectively, calling for the construction of retaining and breast walls in vulnerable areas and regular monitoring of landslide-prone zones on the campus.
The unions described the polytechnic as a unique and irreplaceable asset for technical education in the state. They noted that Government Polytechnic Doyang is the only institute in Nagaland offering a three-year diploma in Architecture Assistantship and the sole polytechnic college in Wokha district.
“The college presently has a satisfactory enrollment with a total strength of 24 students, which reflects the growing interest and importance of the institution,” the LMRSU stated in its representation.
The student bodies acknowledged safety concerns arising from the landslides but argued that temporary relocation would cause academic disruption, administrative complications, financial burdens, and uncertainty among students. They said relocation should be considered only as a last resort.
The unions pointed out that the landslide situation may have been aggravated by continuous heavy rainfall and the ongoing road construction of PMGSY Phase-III (Doyang–Mangmetong road) in the vicinity of the campus. However, they maintained that the situation can still be addressed effectively through engineering interventions.
“Instead of relocating the institution, the concerned department should focus on adopting preventive and protective measures to tackle the landslide issue caused by heavy rainfall and road construction activities,” the ANCSU said.
The LMRSU further requested the department to compare the budget implications of temporary relocation versus the construction of retaining walls, arguing that preventive infrastructure would be more practical and ensure long-term safety and stability.
The appeals, signed by ANCSU President Kivika Yeptho and General Secretary Sotilo Tep, and LMRSU President Rhonbemo Murry and General Secretary Renvungo Jami, urged immediate intervention by the government and the technical education department to avoid any relocation proposal unless absolutely unavoidable.
