North-East records decline even as cases rise 18% nationwide

Nagaland recorded a sharp rise in registered cyber crime cases in 2024, although the overall number remained low, even as the North-East witnessed a decline against a nationwide increase of nearly 18%.
According to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data furnished by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in the Lok Sabha on July 21, Nagaland registered 14 cyber crime cases in 2024, up from two in 2023.
Despite the increase, Nagaland continued to record one of the lowest numbers in the country. The State registered eight cases each in 2020 and 2021, four in 2022 and two in 2023.
Thus, while the 2024 figure was the highest in the five-year period, the total remained relatively small.
The trend across the North-East was different. Taken together, the eight states recorded 700 cases in 2024, down from 1,081 in 2023, a decline of around 35%.
Assam continued to account for the largest share in the region with 408 cases in 2024, but this was less than half the 909 registered in 2023.
Meghalaya followed with 97 cases, Arunachal Pradesh with 78, Mizoram 50, Tripura 33, Sikkim 15, Nagaland 14 and Manipur five.
Among the North-Eastern states, Arunachal Pradesh also registered a notable increase from 24 cases in 2023 to 78 in 2024, while Mizoram rose from 31 to 50 and Sikkim from 12 to 15.
Meanwhile, cyber crime cases across India rose from 86,420 in 2023 to 1,01,928 in 2024, an increase of nearly 18%. The national tally has more than doubled from 50,035 cases in 2020.
Fraud drives national increase
Crime head-wise data showed that fraud registered the largest numerical increase, rising from 19,466 cases in 2023 to 29,758 in 2024. Cheating cases also increased from 16,943 to 19,296, while computer-related offences rose from 35,329 to 36,920.
Meanwhile, the MHA informed the Lok Sabha that more than 65.89 lakh financial fraud complaints were reported on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) between 2021 and 2025, involving more than Rs 55,050 crore.
Over Rs 8,189 crore was marked as lien and more than 1.95 lakh FIRs were registered during the period.
The Ministry further stated that under the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System, more than Rs 11,158 crore had been saved in over 32.80 lakh complaints as of June 30, 2026. The system, launched in 2021, facilitates immediate reporting of financial fraud to prevent funds from being siphoned off by fraudsters.
The NCRB figures relate to cases registered under cyber crimes, while complaints received through the NCRP constitute a separate dataset.
The MHA said investigation, registration of FIRs and subsequent action on cyber crime complaints are handled by the respective State and Union Territory law enforcement agencies.
