Guwahati, August 22 (NNN): Large number supporters of Anna Hazare under the aegis of India Against Corruption (IAC) protested outside the rented house of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Guwahati twice today. In the first incident occurred earlier in the day, the demonstrators shouted slogans for a corruption-free India and tabling of the Jan Lokpal Bill. The people were armed with drums and cymbals and sang patriotic songs. In the evening, a larger group gathered outside the Prime Minister’s rented duplex and protested with torches and candles.
Several eminent people of the city took part in the demonstration. “Today, a majority of people in the country want a corruption-free India. Corruption at almost every level has crippled the country. This menace of corruption has to removed at any cost,” said Haidar Hussain, editor of the highest circulated Assamese daily ‘Asomiya Pratidin’.
“Prime Minister should take initiatives to introduce the Jan Lokpal Bill in Parliament. As a representative of Assam in the Upper House, we feel he has the moral responsibility to listen to our voices,” said Udayadiyta Bharali, former head of Cotton College here.
The Prime Minister, a Rajya Sabha member from Assam since 1991, has a rented house in the Sarumataria area here and his landlady is Hemoprava Saikia, wife of former chief minister Hiteswar Saikia. He pays Rs 700 per month as rent for the duplex that would normally cost at least Rs 5,000.
The administration had deployed security personnel in and around the PM’s rented house, fearing vandalism. It can be noted that more and more people are gradually coming out in the North East region supporting Anna Hazare's anti-corruption movement. On Sunday in Imphal a massive candle light rally was carried out in the heart supporting Anna Hazare's anti-graft movement. The rally was organised by Art of Living, Manipur. However, the rally was dispersed by the police before it got concluded.
Such programmes have also been witnessed in Nagaland's commercial hub Dimapur, Shillong, Aizawl and Tripura in the last few days.
