DIMAPUR, JULY 1 (MExN): Curtains came down on the two-day long 21st Biennial General Conference of the Diphupar Naga Students’ Union. The valedictory session on Friday evening, July 1 was graced by MLA I. Imkong as the chief guest.
“We’re privileged to be members of Diphupar village” – a unique village inhabited by so many tribes living harmoniously, said Imkong in his introduction to the address. Commenting on the theme of the conference ‘Emerge for Integrity’, he said it is an apt example to follow “but I want to take the liberty to improvise on it and restate it as ‘Integrity in Progress’.” “With this in mind, I do not want to stand here and throw advice rather I want to ask a few essential questions for all of us to absorb and contemplate.”
He continued: “I do not want you (youth) to immerse yourselves into the imminent truth that you are the future. Your ideals and standards will be the face of tomorrow.” He thus asked the students to ask themselves whether their principles will be able to face the challenges of life and “if those principles are conducive to change, progress and integrity”.
Integrity, he said is maintaining dignity in an honest way. However, not all are born with; rather it is learned by way of experience, through elders, ethics and religious teachings. It may be difficult to maintain but not impossible, he asserted. Not everyone may be satisfied with the current circumstances, however he added: “I am contented in the knowledge that there is a revolution of the youth in pushing for a better life. This is evident in the current context of young entrepreneurs rising above the challenges and competition for success.” “In whatever field you choose to be in, there is room for change and progress and become professionals.”
To work and improve and be part of this changing world, he said the answer lies within “us”. “As the saying goes, ‘charity begins at home’, progress and change also begin at home.”
Today as a society, Nagas are greatly influenced by the Western culture but not all facets of it are positive, he averred. “We need to filter what we should emulate and what we shouldn’t.” One particular aspect, Nagas can learn from the West, he said is professionalism in any field of work. Referring to the phrase, ‘to make progress is to build on what we have, to believe that today is better than yesterday and tomorrow will be better than both’, he said: “You already have the foundation, you just have to improve on it.” “We always talk about encouraging the youth but why not from today you encourage and inspire us by seizing the initiative to take us to your perceived future”, he challenged.
A new team of office bearers for the union was also elected during the conference. The new team is led by Kitoi Sumi as president, T. Senti Ozukum as general secretary, S. Habenthung Ngullie as vice president, Desring as assistant general secretary, Amos Lotha as speaker, I. Yanger Jamir as auditor general and Mhasibütuo Khezhie as finance secretary. The chief guest also donated a sum of Rs. 50, 000 towards the union.
The session was followed by an entertainment programme dubbed: ‘Naga’s Nite’ which was graced by Hokuto Zhimomi, member of the Dimapur Municipal Council’s advisory board as special guest.
