ANTA condemns alleged sexual assault by unauthorized taxi driver

Kohima, October 22 (MExN): The All Nagaland Taxi Association (ANTA) Hq Kohima has condemned the alleged attempted rape, wrongful confinement and sexual assault of a woman by the driver of private vehicle plying as taxi while she was travelling from Kohima to Chiephobozou on October 17.

Addressing a press conference on October 20, ANTA treasurer Kelhoukkhrielie Chielie along with other executives at its office in Kohima said that the 28-year-old accused driver allegedly failed to stop the vehicle at the intended destination and instead diverted towards the Chiechama-Botsa route at around 1:30 PM on the day.

ANTA expressed solidarity with the victim and her family, commending the woman for filing a First Information Report (FIR) despite the alleged physical and mental trauma she had endured.

The Association urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial and speedy investigation into the case and ensure that the accused is brought to justice.

The ANTA officials also clarified that private vehicles allegedly operating as taxis without proper authorisation are not affiliated with the association, stating that such unauthorised operations tarnish the image of legitimate taxi operators.

Appealing to the public to remain vigilant, the association urged people to report unauthorised vehicles operating as taxis to ANTA or the concerned authorities.

The Association further called for collective efforts to safeguard women’s safety and dignity and to ensure accountability in the transport sector.

Chielie also asserted that ANTA Action Committee along with traffic police has been conducted regular checking of such private vehicles plying as taxis in and around Kohima, especially High School junction and TCP Gate areas.

He said those caught plying without proper authority are being reported to the district administration for necessary action.

Meanwhile, the Riipreo Youth Organization (RYO) also vehemently condemned the alleged sexual assault. It called upon the law enforcement authorities to conduct a prompt investigation and ensure that justice is neither delayed nor denied. The RYO stands in solidarity with the victim and her family and reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the rule of law and the pursuit of justice.
