Imphal | December 20
Police in the state capital had a hard time on Friday controlling a group of anti-CAA protestors who organised a demonstration on the crowded street of Imphal.
People from different walks of life have been staging various forms of protest against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Imphal in the last few days.
As part of continuation of the protest, a large number of people from different walks of life converged at Khwairamband Keithel in the heart of Imphal. They started the anti-CAA demonstration by singing “We shall overcome ..…” while some of them chanting anti-CAA slogans. However, soon after police rushed to the spot and attempted to disperse the protestors.
The protestors carried placards which some of them read as “Northeast is not immigrant shelter”, “No to CAA/NRC”, “NE is not a dumping ground”, “Omit Shah”, etc.
As claimed by the demonstrators, they hail from different professions.
Before the demonstration in the crowded market place, the concerned citizens gathered at Iroishemba of Imphal West and staged a peaceful protest there against CAA. The protest was staged to show solidarity to the people of Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya as well as other cities of the country who are fighting against CAA.
When they converged at Khwairamband Keithel, police tried to foil them from carrying out the demonstration with warning of using force to maintain public order.
As the demonstration defied the police warning and attempted to further their demonstration, a heated exchange of words between the police and protestors ensued.
Police detained some individuals and attempted to take them away. However, following a strong resistance, police set them free.
