Itanagar, October 7 (MExN): In Arunachal Pradesh, civil society is leading the way in protesting against a state government led by an unpopular chief minister whose recent political gaffes have only incensed the state’s citizens. AP’s citizens today demanded immediate resignation of Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin, following allegations of political scheming and more recently, communal sensitive remarks in the national media. The largest community in the state, the Nyishi community, has also asked its legislators to resign immediately.
Even as other civil organizations have already protested the state government and chief minister, the Nyishi community, the single largest tribe inhabiting five districts of Arunachal Pradesh, today reiterated its demand for immediate resignation of Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin. Backed by the influential Nyishi Elite Society (NES) and the All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU) took out a rally this morning in the state’s capital Itanagar.
Demand for President’s Rule
Addressing the masses who joined the rally in the thousands, NES President Bengia Tolum expressed exasperation that despite repeated correspondences and cooperation from the NES to the state government and three consecutive ‘bandh’ called by the ANSU, the state government had failed to read the pulse of the people. The NES pointed that the government has gone defunct. Some elected legislators and ministers camping are in New-Delhi and some are confined inside the chief minister’s official bungalow in Itanagar, the organizations said. Condemning the situation and the subsequent lawlessness in the state, the apex socio-cultural body of the community urged the governor to ensure governance and enforce Rule of Law in the state by way of change in leadership or imposition of President’s Rule.
Reiterating its previous stand, the NES leader also made it clear that Gamlin must resign as chief minister to facilitate a sound leadership.
In a bid to press across its demands, the NES-ANSU combine has called a 36-hour bandh in all the five Nyishi-dominated districts of the state beginning at 5 am on October 12 next. “As an extreme gesture of lose of faith on the present government,” the Nyishi bodies have also called upon all the ministers and parliamentary secretaries belonging to the tribe to resign from their respective posts. It further urged all the 14 Nyishi MLAs in the 60 member Legislative Assembly to withdraw support from the Gamlin government while appealing legislators of other communities to follow suit.
The rally ‘Itanagar Angtu’ (‘Itanagar Chalo’) organized by the NES-ANSU in protest against the state government undertook a number of resolutions. “The elected legislators and the ministers are presently camping in New-Delhi and some groups sealed inside the chief minister’s bungalow, Itanagar for such a long time. Thus, there is no transaction of the business of the government, thereby, taking a ride on the people,” the rally said. “Therefore, we condemn the lawlessness in the state and urge upon His Excellency, the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh and to invoke his wisdom and ensure governance and enforce Rule of Law in the state by way of change in leadership or imposition of President’s Rule.”
Likewise, the organizations have reiterated that Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin must resign to facilitate sound leadership.
The NES-ANSU has also decided to call a 36-hour bandh in all Nyishi-inhabited districts/areas of east Kameng, Papum Pare, Lower Subansiri, Upper Subansiri and Kurung Kumey districts from 5.00 am of 12.10.2011(Wednesday) to 5.00 pm of 13.10.2011(Thursday).
All ministers and parliamentary secretaries from the Nyishi community shall resign while all the fourteen MLAs shall accordingly withdraw support to the government, the organizations said. ‘An also we appeal all the like-minded hon’ble ministers and parliamentary secretaries of the state who believes in peaceful Arunachal and peaceful co-existence to resign and the entire sixty legislators of the state to withdraw support to the present government...” the civil organizations said.
