DIMAPUR, JULY 28 (MExN): The Ministry of Home Affairs has informed that among the North East States, Assam recorded the highest number of cases registered in respect of custodial deaths and deaths in police encounters from 2020 to March 2022.
Nagaland, on the other hand, recorded the lowest number of cases in these parameters in the region. Replying to an unstarred question by MP, Dr Abdussamad Samandi, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued year wise and state wise details on the number of registered cases about custodial and encounter deaths from April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2022, as per NHRC data.
Out of the North East States, Assam recorded 41 cases registered in respect of custodial deaths and 22 cases registered in respect of deaths in police encounter from April 2020 to March 2022. The numbers for the other NE States are: Nagaland (1 & 1), Manipur (2 & 1), Meghalaya (20 & 2), Sikkim (6 and 0), Tripura (7 & 0), Mizoram (11 & 0), and Arunachal Pradesh (5 & 1)
